1900: Unique photograph album of Manchester factory life in early 1900s

Tootal Broadhurst Lee Co., Ltd. :

Photographic Album of Handkerchief Works, Newton Heath, Manchester.

Privately published, not dated, early 1900s.

An original photograph album, 7.5 x 10 inches, containing 18 real photographs, each postcard size approximately 4 x 6 inches and with printed captions, of different departments and employees within the Tootal Broadhurst Lee handkerchief factory at Newton Heath, Manchester.

The album, whilst undated, was clearly produced by the company itself in the early 1900s, possibly in conjunction with the Oldham Road Day Continuation School which appeared to be involved in training girls for the factory.

In very good unmarked condition, the photographs being particularly crisp and fresh. Protected in a modern handmade archival cloth slipcase, leather label titled in gilt.

The photographs are of: Piece Stock Room; Cutting Room; Automatic Hemstitching Section; No. 1 Machine Room (2 views); No. 2 Machine Room; Calendering, Folding and Ironing Section; Sorting Section; Finishing Section; Welfare Section; Cutting Room Staff; No. 1 Machine Room Staff; No. 2 Machine Room Staff; Calendering, Folding and Ironing Staff; Sorting and Finishing Staff; Sheet Hemming Staff; Continuation School; Managerial, Office and Maintenance Staff.

As well as the very clear photographs of the machinery within the factory, all shown working with their girl operatives, the group photographs contain a total of around 500 girls employed in the various sections, many of the girls being apparently in their early teens.

Overall, an outstanding record, possibly now unique and unpublished elsewhere, of Manchester factory life in the early 1900s.
