James Macfarlane :

Practical Notes on Pipe Founding

London: Spon, 1888.

8.5 inches x 6 inches (22 cms x 15 cms). ix+138 pages, + 32 pages publisher's catalogue of scientific books at the end. 15 detailed engraved illustrations, some folding, of cast iron pipes and pipe-work.

The author, James W. Macfarlane, was one of the owners of Macfarlane, Strang & Co's Lochburn Iron Works, in Maryhill, Glasgow, designed and constructed in about 1875.

The final engraved plate in the book (shown below) is an accurate ground plan of the Lochburn Iron Works themselves in 1888 - an important piece of both Glasgow local and industrial history and probably unpublished other than in this work.

Also included in the book (shown in part below) is a detailed "Cost of production" table giving great insight into the running costs of a pipe founding works towards the end of the Victorian period.
